Bangles, tattoos and coconuts! Oh, My!
Wednesday, September 17th, 2008I had the opportunity to attend an Indian wedding recently, it was loads of fun. If you ever have the chance to attend one my recommendation is go, go go!! It was bright, beautiful, interesting, educational and tasty. The food was mostly vegetarian, delicious and a serious source of raw inspiration. There was also a lot of dancing so if you like to boogie you’ll be right at home:)
This red spotted coconut isn’t a rare coconut you’ve never seen before, this coconut was part of the wedding ceremony. The red dot is the same paint like substance that bindi dots are made of. The coconut water was poured over the bride and grooms car in the departure part of the wedding. My cute friend saved the coconut just for me, knowing how much I like them. It made a tasty breakfast:)
I’ve always loved henna tattoos, I was thrilled to get one for the occasion. I found an awesome henna place in Brooklyn, if your in the market , I recommend Nick at NY Adorned. All of his henna tattoos were much bigger and more elaborate than mine. I was going for the dainty bracelet look, instead of the traditional henna tattoos on both hands. Henna also smells really, really good, like BBQ.
I’m a sucker for accessories and bangles are a must have for Indian weddings. They’re elaborate, sparkly and they jingle, jewelry couldn’t be more fun. These bangles were a much enjoyed gift from the grooms mother. The groom told us stories of bangle shops in India where the entire store was lined with a rainbow array of bangles and the goal is to perfectly match your bangles to your saree.
Indian cayenne Corn
~3 Cobs of fresh corn
~1/4 Cup of diced red bell pepper
~1/8 Tsp of cayenne pepper
~1/8 Tsp Sea Salt
~ Juice of 1 lime
~Chopped cilantro garnish
Cut the corn off the cobs and place in a mixing bowl, add in the lime juice, cayenne pepper and salt. Mix well and garnish with chopped cilantro. Place a wedge of lime on the plate in case you want a little more oomph.
The inspiration for this dish came from the bride, she’d made barbecued corn on the cob where she rubbed on salt, cayenne and lime juice. I had a hunch that a raw version would be tasty and it is. This recipe is also quick and easy, just the way I like it!!
